Another Milestone by Sachin Tendulkar

Another Milestone by Sachin Tendulkar

Records are created only to be broken, but the milestones stand the test of time.

Since Kerry Packer introduced One day Cricket in a competition called World Series Cricket in 1977, no one had scored a double century in a limited over match, not until today. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar scored 200 not out against South Africa at Gwalior Feb. 24.

Sachin had been called the “best batsman of all time.” I am not hung up on the “best batsman of all time” label so much, because that definitely is arguable. If batsmen are measured for their scores I doubt if anyone would even come close to the famous Aussie, Sir Donald Bradman, who had a test average of 99.94 runs. Australian captain Bill Woodfull termed Bradman, “worth three batsmen to Australia.”

Sir Jon Berry Hobbs (popularly known as Jack Hobbs), the gentle Englishman would be another contender for the same title for his sheer ability to play in any pitches against any bowlers and his record runs and centuries in first class matches, which are yet to be surpassed.

Tendulkar deserves credit for his sheer tenacity. A few years back he had hit a bad patch, and many people were calling for his skull. He had to overcome nagging injuries and even make adjustments to his batting techniques to make a comeback. On March 19, 2006, Tendulkar was booed off his own home ground by the spectators when he was out scoring only one run off 21 balls against England in a Test match. This was the time when he was virtually written off. Tendulker himself never had any doubt, always displaying sheer determination and persistence. It is a story of triumph of one man over all adversities scaling ever newer heights against the odds of time. Today, he owns most records for batting at the top level of the game.

Sachin Tendulkar scored the first ever double century in one-day international cricket with a flawless flaying of South Africa at Roop Singh Stadium overnight (NZT), helping India seal the three-match series with a game to spare.

Tendulkar finished on 200 not out in eclipsing the previous highest score of 194, jointly made by Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry against Bangladesh in Bulawayo last August and Pakistan's Saeed Anwar against India at Chennai in May 1997.

Tendulkar carried his bat through all 50 overs, reaching the landmark in the last over off 147 deliveries to help India amass 401-3 and win by 153 runs.

South Africa, which lost the first match by 1 run, was all out for 248 in the 43rd over despite a fighting unbeaten 114 by AB de Villiers.

The nearly 30,000 in the partisan crowd went delirious as Tendulkar surpassed the previous highest score in one-dayers with two off fast bowler Wayne Parnell behind short fine leg in the 46th over.

Tendulkar's previous best was 186 not out against New Zealand at Hyderabad in November 1999.

He saved his biggest reaction for becoming the first man to 200, with a single off Charl Langeveldt with three balls left. He took off his helmet, raised it and his bat and savoured the prolonged standing ovation from the crowd and both teams.

The 36-year-old dedicated his latest achievement to the "people of India who have stood behind me for 20 years whatever be the ups and downs."

He said he enjoyed batting as the ball was coming nicely onto the bat.

"When I was on 175-plus and only 42 overs bowled, I thought there was a chance," to score a double century, he said.

"But I wasn't thinking of it. Only when I got close to it, I really thought there is an opportunity."

Tendulkar plundered runs from the Proteas almost at will with some dazzling cover drives and pull shots. He'd pick up deliveries from outside the off stump and hit them over mid-on. He smashed 25 boundaries and three sixes.

South African captain Jacques Kallis lauded Tendulkar and lamented his side.

"It was a fantastic knock. He took advantage of conditions," Kallis said. "We lost wickets at crucial stages. We have to work on basics."

Tendulkar punished Parnell for two successive boundaries in the first over he faced, and cricket's greatest international runmaker brought up his 46th one-day century in 90 balls in the 28th over.

Incredible knock from an incredible star

Incredible knock from an incredible star

What does one say about something that has never been seen before? That it is special? Yes it is, incredibly so. That it is incredible? It is that too. That it could not have happened to someone who deserved it more? Absolutely.

200 not out in a One Day International, 2961 matches gone by before this. And then, given that Sachin Tendulkar is the first man in history to get to the mark in his 21st year of international cricket, with mind and body intact through astonishing pressure and responsibility, makes the feat all the more laudable.

He has shown and proved time and again that age is absolutely no criteria to judge a player. It's what someone does on the field of play that matters.
Best-ever Season

The statistics show that this has been Sachin's best-ever international season, in Tests and one-day internationals combined. He's been on some sort of golden run-getting spree, notching up the hundreds and more importantly, setting up wins and then winning matches for India. It's been fascinating to watch.

Twenty years of cricket takes a huge toll on the body and Sachin has had every injury in the book. But he's come back from each one, stronger, fitter and mentally, as sure of himself as he's always been.

I thought the way he celebrated when he reached his 200 epitomised the man's persona. There was no running laps around the field, no aggressive gestures, nothing over-the-top. He did what he always does, raised both his arms, closed his eyes for a moment and quietly acknowledged that it had been done.

Of this innings itself, it wasn't easy. South Africa have a very good all-round attack. They have quality fast bowlers and yet, he just toyed with them. You could almost see him think, ‘where do I play the next ball?' It was fascinating stuff. He clearly enjoyed himself on the day, is enjoying this team, and it's all showing.
Great teacher

But watching Sachin play as he's been doing, taking pleasure in the various roles he has within the set-up, that of competitor, senior professional, mentor, match-winner; watching him mesh them seamlessly, as always with rare grace, is a learning experience. If the youngsters in the team can take even 10 per cent of what he does, they'll be better cricketers for it.

It's nice to see an Indian on top of the one-day performances, really nice. And at this point, the only thing left for Sachin really is Brian Lara's mark. But I'm sure that 401* in Tests is not far around the corner. With Sachin, nothing really is impossible. Even now, at nearly 37, his best is yet ahead.
